These platforms focus on grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and listening.

• BBC Learning English: One of the most comprehensive free resources. Great for "real-world" English, news-based learning, and pronunciation.
• British Council - LearnEnglish: High-quality, structured materials for all levels. Excellent for formal grammar and exam preparation (IELTS).
• News in Levels: An incredible tool for differentiated instruction. It provides the same news story written in three different levels of English complexity.
• Cambridge English: The gold standard for certification and formal assessment tools.
• Write & Improve: (By Cambridge) A tool that gives students instant feedback on their writing, allowing them to iterate and improve before a teacher sees the work.

2. English Literature & Analysis

These resources are essential for moving beyond basic language to the study of texts, context, and criticism.

• Project Gutenberg: A library of over 70,000 free eBooks. Essential for accessing public domain classics (Austen, Dickens, Poe) without cost.
• The Poetry Foundation / Poets.org: The best archives for poetry, including biographies of poets and deep-dives into specific poems.
• LitCharts: While SparkNotes is the "classic," LitCharts provides superior side-by-side analysis of text and themes, which is visually helpful for students.
• The Folger Shakespeare Library: The premier resource for anyone studying Shakespeare, offering digitized texts and scholarly articles.

3. AI Applied to Language Learning

This is the fastest-growing sector. These tools go beyond "chatting" and specifically target pedagogy.

For Teachers (Instructional Design)

• Twee: (Highly Recommended) A specialized AI tool specifically for English teachers. It can generate reading comprehension questions from a YouTube video, create gap-fill exercises, and design discussion prompts in seconds.
• MagicSchool.ai: An all-in-one AI platform for teachers that helps with IEPs, lesson planning, and adapting a text to a lower reading level.
• Curipod: Uses AI to create interactive lessons where students can submit ideas and the AI helps synthesize them into a class discussion.

For Students (Skill Acquisition)

• Claude.ai / ChatGPT: Best used as a Socratic Tutor. Instead of asking for the answer, students can be taught to prompt: "I am learning English; can you look at this paragraph and explain why my use of the present perfect is wrong, but don't give me the correction immediately?"
• DeepL: Far more nuanced and context-aware than Google Translate. Excellent for comparing how a complex literary phrase translates into a native language.
